2016 pilot / 2018 ongoing SENSE HERITAGE/ 9 LIVES of CURATOR

00.jpg

The Course 9 Lives of curator (with its wider project frame Sense Heritage) started as a pilot course at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Philosophy (Seminar for museology and heritage studies) in 2016. Only in that year It was entitled Nine deaths of curator. Since it became regular in 2018 it was renamed into Nine lives of curator.

WHY? / PROBLEM?

In 2014 the Serbian Government prohibited any employment in the public sphere (culture and museums being the part). Initially, the course Nine deaths of Curator represented the critical stand towards that decision because in the two first years of its application it became obvious that the gap between museum experienced professionals and the young, just about to step to the museum scene, newcomers would become unbridgeable in years to come.

It started to affect the average museum professional "age" as well as the distancing of young people from the heritage ecosystem in general. It became very visible during 2017 and 2018 that the gap is not only institutional: new generations with fresh and up-to-date ideas are not filling the systematic "cracks" in public memory. This makes the usual transfer of knowledge and experience more difficult and that lead to generational gap.

In that circumstances "deaths" sounded inappropriate if the goal was not to be frivolously critical but to search for the solutions.

THE SEARCH FOR SOLUTIONS

The Nine Lives of curator is trying to solve these problems by providing the platform for the exchange of knowledge and ideas, as well as new methodologies of research and communicating heritage. The course is held mainly at the university building, but also in several museums in Belgrade and Novi Sad (ECC2022). Numerous experts in diverse professional areas from all over Serbia (as well as from the USA, Malta, Poland, Slovenia, Norway) both from institutions and independent organizations participated in the course recognizing it as a platform to strengthen the new generations of arriving professionals, to make contacts with young colleagues, and finally to express the support for putting pressure to decision makers to abandon the rule of employment prohibition. The latest eventually happened in 2021, but the platform continued as a credible and recognized hot-spot for exchange of ideas, fresh ideas and projects` laboratory, critical stands and resource for new and talented people. The established experts in the museum / heritage / culture / civil / activist sectors acted as mentors, coworkers, debating lecturers, hosts (in their own institutions / organizations / spaces / galleries), shared their ideas, thoughts, critiques, but also their fears, insecurities and dilemmas offering more human side of profession.

OUTCOMES

Many students were / are engaged through NK ICOM Serbia Communications and Events (like ICOM Serbia Award Scheme website and social networks), documentation research, digitization, practical work in the best museums in Serbia (like the National museums of Serbia, the Museum of contemporary art in Belgrade, Gallery of Matica srpska in Novi Sad, Museum of Yugoslavia,  Museum of science and technology in Belgrade, Museum of Nikola Tesla, several galleries, or simply started their own projects in their organizations supported by different funds.

FURTHER GOALS

The ultimate goals are to create the loose alumni / coccus of young people who were fighters for their right to be in the heritage and museum field, to maintain the experience professionals and young people`s energy together and in permanent communication, to open possibilities for constant education and exchange of ideas and perspectives, and to insist on openness and mutual intergenerational and interdisciplinary understanding.

Because we all learn from each others constantly.

RESEARCH PROJECTS

2017 EAST & W/R:EST

The research project explores the presence and relevance of East European museology and museum/heritage practices in the European and global flows and tendencies. Starting from the statistical data about the presence of East European museums and heritage projects in diverse European and global competitions, surveys and pools such as EMYA/EMF, EMA (DASAŽiva Awards (Forum of Slavic Cultures), Luigi MIchelettiEuropa Nostra - EU Heritage Awards, The Best in Heritage, etc... It goes beyond the statistics and tries to reveal the ideas, theories, structures, and paradigms of good practices and the general cultural and social context behind them.

The aim of the research is to investigate the wider context of heritage and culture of memory of East Europe and its position in European and global museological and museum scene, the distinctiveness of its approaches, visibility, and representativeness, hence the relevance. Also, the goal is to explore the reverse influences – to what extent the international presence of paramount practices of Poland and Višegrad Group influenced other museums and heritage projects in the region: how they inspired (or provoked) changes in missions and social engagements and did they impact the further development of the local/national policies?

The three-month research is supported through the Thesaurus Poloniae fellowship of the International Cultural Center in Krakow Poland. Support for the Balkan region comes from the Center for museology and heritology (Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade) and ICOM SEE

2017 MUSEUM off BOUNDARIES

020.JPG

With subtititle Reviving SheStories & Heritage [in a] Supermarket the research project Museum off boundaries is a project based on two intertwining research activities: (1) Classical professional and scientifically based research of possible dialogues between specific themes of American colonial history and contemporary notions of “colonial”, (2) Research of interpretative possibilities and creative capacities of (living history) methodologies with the aim to put the dialogue in the very core of the museum communication – between histories/chronologies, between museum and public and between public itself.

The one month research is supported through the fellowship of Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and EXARC. It'll be conducted in Colonial Williamsburg Library and Museum.

CODE: GENDER

The concepts of “female principle” and “male principle” are problematic, artificial and uninteresting. They are black-and-white echoes from the world that never actually existed. We are a mixture of different characteristics, many of which have been culturally defined to be considered either masculine or feminine. These words, however, are not the ones we like to use to express our inner selves nor our working poetics. The world we live in is highly saturated in these polarized categorizations. Patriarchal structures justify their dominance through binary opposition, these include but are not limited to: heaven/earth, mind/body, male/female, human/animal, spirit/matter, culture/nature and white/non-white. We would need to try to get rid of the dualist simplifications and more and more see the complex connections between beings and other things.

FAMILY SCENES

“Beat your children as soon as you notice they resemble you”, that is how Duško Radović, a famous Serbian poet,  advised us long ago. Nowadays, this first word, the command “beat”, can easily cause a kind of discomfort. A restlessness that slowly withdraws before “as soon as you notice”, especially before the climax “they resemble you”. In the midst of the debate over how to arrange relations between parents and children and how to redefine parenthood, and thus largely  childhood,  The Open Air Museum “Old Village” in Sirogojno reflects this issue through the exhibition  Family  “scenes” by sculptor  Marko  Crnobrnja combining it with the heritage and traditions that influenced our opinions and behaviour.

ЉУБАВНА ШВРЉАЊA

LOVE AFFAIRS

Why “Love affairs” in the museum? Well, why not? We, as authors are asking ourselves should we deal only with big things, big truths, big histories, and solemnly with the past. Or we can also offer one of the perspectives of who we were, who we are now and whom might we become… “Affairs” mark our everyday life, our private lives but also that`s a universal human question. The subject is humorous at first sight (everybody laughs while speaking about love achievements) and we also used a humorous approach. But when we go “down” on the levels of personal stories and experiences things are starting to change slowly – let`s think for the moment about those who are betrayed, cheated, and left alone and we are going to understand that we are talking about something painful, even tragic. Let`s ask ourselves about our own reasons for a laugh! But also for our thoughts and prejudices… Project is based on 300+ hours of audio-recorded material in interviews with over 70 people during the ethnographic researches, research on folk poetry (iconic traditional poems) and collections of the founder of reformer of the Serbian modern language, popular series, novels, movies.

HERITAGE (in a) SUPERMARKET

Heritage (in a) Supermarket examines the relationship of an individual and the collective agreement embodied in heritage, as well as the situation where these two meet through the interpretative tool of devised theatre. Two main characters are improvising different roles, changing the interior of one of the museum houses during the acts. Changes are not always for the better, or to promote heritage, quite opposite. Throughout the process, the project the museum objects are "thrown away" to the museum shop where they are exhibited as pieces of art and their prices are astronomical.

The project examines the relationship of elite and democratic approach, actors, addresses a mixture of disciplines, science and art, installation and ethnographic heritage, living word, and visual impact, debate and its absence, idealization, nostalgia, and emotion versus objectification. Finally, Heritage (in a) Supermarket examines the role of the education system that is necessary for museum communication and whether the model of mutual learning is possible in reality and practice. Thus, Heritage  (in a) supermarket raises the question of what is curator today?

Most of all, Heritage (in a) Supermarket is about all of us. The Serbian title represents this in the most obvious way:

БАШ - Exactly, ТИ - You, НА - On (Баш_Ти_На as the whole word means HERITAGE), НА РАФУ - on a shelf/sale.

A-SMYLE VOLUNTEER CREATIVE ECO-CAMP

Five consecutive years of fruitful collaboration between American Councils and the “Old Village” museum is marked by intensive collaboration between the A-SMYLE Alumni and American Councils staff and the museum staff. The results are many, yet the re-cultivated soil of an old orchard and re-created 3D installation of the hopes and fears of an imagined “prototype” of a 1980s Serbian family migrating from a rural to an urban area, are the best ones. The name of the 3D installation is YouGo! and it comes from an old Yugoslav car "Yugo" in which the installation is set. The place is a museum parking place and the installation refers to the migration from rural to urban, migrations in general and especially, the brain-drain of young people from Serbia.

DRONING OLD VILLAGE - FOUR SEASONS

In cooperation with photographer Jovo Marjanovic and Aerofokus from Belgrade museum started the air photo and video shooting (droning). The project was named Four seasons because the sessions are divided into four segments in order to evidence the changes in nature as well as with people visiting the museum. The project is initiated as a reaction to public odium after the football match Serbia - Albania. Especially towards the technology device that instantly became one of the favorites for aerial photos.

FRONTIERS IN RETREAT
Crossing borders and mixing spheres, geographical and mental, artistic and scientific, we clearly come back to those "rhetorical" questions from the beginning: do we set some limits in order to preserve the values of one world? At the same time, the challenge in front of us is actually the challenge of not crossing! Through the project "Frontiers in Retreat", in an art language, we valorise the world around us, life outside that greatly affects our own existence. There are no limits when creating a model of how to prevent ourselves from crossing that border of destruction.

ZLATIBORER FOR A WHILE

Who`s "Zlatiborer" today?

The uncontrolled growth of the real estate market, and thus dramatically increased the number of newly built apartments sold, proved to be a non-developmental factor: Zlatibor has always been a place open to the influences of various cultures and their values. Through the new movements new cultures and their values have not come to the fore, but a general simplification of identity that is actually intruded by the absence of values.

The "Houses" are partipative model of creating the exhibition where the local community took part in decicing what are the house role models, what are the most significant building representatives of their identity, and most of all - what stories from collective momory can they tell.

The reserach platform was demanding, yet the result was great: Not only that walking paths were established, as well as the byke routes and car navigation, but people came together in sharing their memories, strengthening their community values and integrity.
